How Do They Track You? Let Us Count the Ways
In my article in Monday’s Times, “To Aim Ads, Web Is Keeping Closer Eye on What You Click,” I worked with comScore to develop a new measure for Web companies: how much data they can collect from users.
On the Internet, companies are typically ranked by how many different people visit their sites in a given month. And when Microsoft announced its $41 billion bid for Yahoo, comScore and Nielsen Online promptly put out estimates counting how many people would be in the merged company’s total audience.
But audience size is not everything in the online world. Advertisers increasingly want media companies to find their most likely customers and show their ads only to those people, rather than to the site’s entire audience.
Such targeted advertising requires data, so there’s a good argument to be made that we can spot the companies that will lead the pack in online advertising by looking at the depth of data that large media companies can collect about each of their Web visitor. Here is some more detail about the methodology comScore and I came up with:
Don’t Get Overwhelmed by Internet Marketing
To really succeed with internet affiliate marketing, you need to implement a lot of different methods for building traffic, getting backlinks, creating content etc. etc. etc. Just using one or two techniques won’t really cut it in the long run. It requires a lot of work and good marketing techniques to create a site that makes substantial income.
Of course, I know you know this already (I hope!). But, researching and using all of these techniques efficiently can be an extremely daunting task.
Let me give you an example that you may have already experienced. Today, I decided it would be a good idea to draw out a “marketing mind map” to plan ahead what kind of promotion I would use and to estimate my costs. Since I’m not rich just yet
, I want to be frugal, yet still make sure my sites get enough exposure to succeed.
So I outlined every marketing tool and technique I would use and how they all linked together. This spun off into a massive research session about how to do each of these things properly and such. By the end of the day, I was so overwhelmed with information and stuff I had to do that it actually started to get me down.

Russell Brunson’s unique philosophy that affiliates should be provided not only with powerful tools but the knowledge to use them has pushed TheSecondTier to the top of competing programs.
Russell has taken affiliate training to a whole new level. He understands that he can have hundreds of affiliates that don’t know what they are doing and get decent sales OR he can give them the knowledge and tools they need to create explosive amounts of money AND share with them a very generous portion of the profits from each sale they generate!
Here are just a few of the things that you’ll learn inside of TheSecondTier:
• How to choose the right product for you to promote – One of the biggest mistakes that almost all affiliates make when they first start out, is that they try to promote too many things at once.
This video will show you exactly how to choose the right one or two products that will make you the most money.
• How to set up an “Affiliate Squeeze” page – Less then 2% of all affiliates use this powerful technique, but after you implement it into your affiliate promotions, you will see your commissions grow exponentially.

• How to use teleseminars to close ten times the clients in 1/2 the time – One of the secrets to selling a lot of products as an affiliate quickly is doing teleseminars. I was nervous when I did my first few, but now I can’t stop because every time I do one, my affiliate checks from that day are anywhere from $2,000 – $15,000 (and it’s a lot easier then you’d think).
• How to broker JV deals and make a fortune on your 2nd tier – Many of our affiliates earn thousands of dollars each month from the efforts of others. These videos will show you exactly how they find super affiliates to add to their second tier.
• How to protect your commissions from thieves while increasing your conversions – One of the number one concerns that affiliates have are people stealing their commissions. You will learn the techniques that will protect your links and also guarantee that even the worst thieves will gladly give you their commissions instead of keeping it for themselves.
• and a whole lot more….
Russell does not discriminate against less experienced affiliates. In fact, he’s already taken countless numbers of people from knowing 0 to being listed among his top affiliates. It is so effective that some people actually pay to sell products for him!
The products Russell puts out are of top quality and always in demand. In fact, people call his office months before products are ready just begging to know when they can get their hands on them. Combine this with all the promotional and training tools
Russell provides and you’re already half way to making serious affiliate commissions. The other half will be done when you take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

Have You Plugged These Holes In Your Business?
I had been puttering along and doing quite well online for years. My income had grown to six figures and I considered my marketing plan solid and well-rounded. It was not.
I uncovered two holes that were leaking income like a broken faucet. In fact, these two holes were costing me more than $150,000 a year. I plugged them and that’s how much my income increased.
Do you need to plug these holes in your business as well? Read on and find out…
Squash This Ad
…This is fine for the ad agencies and creative professionals who get paid to “create” but not so good for the paying customer who receives a disappointing consumer response in exchange for their valuable – and limited – advertising dollars. It’s also fine for Coke, Nike, Budweiser and so on because the big dollar outlay on repetitive advertising is almost exclusively geared to brand promotion and almost never an immediate call to action.
For small business it’s a mistake to follow this type of strategy. Some marketing experts suggest that as consumers, we are presented with over three thousand advertising messages in a typical day. Billboards, T.V. commercials, radio commercials, email marketing, banner ads, pop-ups, pop-unders, direct response mail at home and at work (aka junk mail), telemarketing, fax broadcasts – you get the idea. To break through and capture the attention of your target audience, your advertising message needs to interrupt and then it must engage the attention of your qualified prospects so that they’ll continue to search for more information…
Characteristics of a Perfect Incoming Link
What is a quality incoming link? This article describes the key characteristics of a perfect link. For explanation purposes, the sample company is a shoe retailer called Fred’s Sports, and the keyword phrase being optimized for is “blue Nike sneakers”.
Key word phrase in anchor text – Unless you put your keyword phrase in the anchor text (the text that describes the web site being linked to), you are wasting a lot of link power. Unfortunately a lot of people don’t know this an end up putting their company name in the link text rather than the keyword phrase that they want their company to be found by. Much better that they link anchor says “blue Nike sneakers” than “Fred’s Sports Store”.
The link is from a relevant page – Google and the Google-powered search partners seek relevance in the interconnectedness of web pages. Incoming links should be from pages where the content on that page is related to the content of the page that is being linked to. A fishing related page linking to a casino site is an example of a non-related link. A jogging related page linking to a blue Nike sneakers product page is related and is looked upon favorably by the search engines.
If It Looks Like An Ad They Ignore It
If you were specifically looking for the population of the United States, you’d notice the big red numbers in the upper right corner of the US Census Bureau homepage right? Not so fast. A recent eye-tracking study suggests you’ve been trained to ignore things like that.
If It Looks Like An Ad They Ignore It
Editor’s Note: Studies are great and all, but sometimes real-world examples are more powerful. Have you recently redesigned your site and seen drastic results? Let us know how you did that in the comments section.
Usability expert Jakob Nielsen, who’s been studying how people interact with webpages since there were webpages to interact with, follows up on previous explorations to show once again that people not only ignore content that looks like advertising, but need things plainly spelled out for them.
The task was simple enough: find the country’s current population. Nielsen even gave them the website to use. But 86 percent of users failed to find the answer even though it was displayed in large red letters in plain sight.
“Users tend to ignore heavily formatted areas because they look like advertisements. Thus, about 1/3 of users never even saw the Population Clock. However, most people did fixate on this area because it’s not as overly formatted as most promotional features. So, most users saw the Population Clock; they just didn’t use it, even though it contained the exact information they were looking for.”
Okay, so a third doesn’t exactly make up 86 percent. Why did the others fail when, in my grandmother’s language, if it was a snake it woulda bit them? There are many reasons, but a large chunk of it, says Nielsen, lies in the language.
7 Steps To Profitable Niche Markets
by Paul Greaves Print
For many, the most daunting stage of beginning an information or other Internet marketing business is deciding which niche market to choose. There is no doubt that publishing niche e-books can be extremely profitable but finding the right niche or niches to exploit can be both time consuming and disheartening for those without proper know how.
Fortunately there are tried and tested methods for finding suitable niches, which anyone can adapt and use in their own business. In this article I want to highlight a very simple, straightforward strategy for finding as many profitable niche markets to sell e-books in to as you could ever want.
This is an amazingly useful site for finding out how popular a niche is and it doesn’t cost a penny to sign up to.
Just type in any niche markets which interest you. For instance, if you are interested in organic gardening you would type in “organic Gardening”. All you need to do then is list all of the sub niches within the general niche of organic gardening. These are all potential niches for your business to exploit.
Google trends is a relatively recent tool in the internet marketer’s armoury. It will show you a graphical view of your niche keyword search volume over the last couple of years, allowing you to spot seasonal or other trends easily. News stories are included in the graph so that you can see if outside factors have influenced search volume. Also shown is where the searches are coming from, identified by region, city and even language. Now is the time to decide if your market is limited or has widespread appeal.
Often overlooked, the major book-selling organization Amazon is an incredible resource for finding niche markets. In the search bar on the company’s website, select books and then type in the niche that you would like to create a product for. Market gardening would once again be a good example.
The results of this search will provide plenty of insight into potential sub niches at which your e-book can be aimed. The topics covered by the books, DVDs or CDs in your niche interest will show you what are the main concerns of your potential niche. The sales rankings will give you a fantastic indication of demand.
Don’t worry because you are not going to be competing with Amazon. You are going to be catering to the market in a very different way. As an e-book publisher your customers can download your products straight away rather than having to wait days or even weeks for their books to arrive from Amazon. Another bonus is that downloadable info products tend to be regarded as having a higher perceived value than their physical paper and print counterparts. Selling a book through Amazon may make you fifteen dollars but as a downloadable e-book it could fetch up to fifty.
The Dummies company are master craftsmen when it comes to creating products for niche markets and their website is a superb research tool for the e-book publisher to use. You will find masses of niche topics and ideas within the “for dummies” book range. Simply search through their titles in general niches that interest you and make a list of all the possible e-book topics that you see.
Article directories are, just about the best way to find subjects to create e-books around. The directory Go Articles is just one of many in which you can go to the site, type in a niche subject in the search bar and get literally thousands and thousands of e-book ideas.
Websites – Visit existing websites catering to your potential niche. What solutions do they offer? If the site runs a forum or notice board, what are the most commonly discussed topics? How does the website look? Could you provide better solutions for their customers?
Magazines – Go to your local major bookseller/magazine retailer and look at publications aimed at the niche in which you are interested. Buy a few to study. What questions are asked in the letter pages? What is being advertised? What concerns do the editorials commonly express? Could an e-book provide solutions?
Use of the above research methods will help you to get a definite feel as to the potential of any niches that you have an interest in.
Done properly e-book or info publishing can be a very profitable business model. You won’t become a millionaire overnight with one site or one product but, build a network of sites, and you can get there. The key here is being able to come up with an endless amount of niche product ideas. Then all you need to do is create the product.
That’s easy to say isn’t it? “All you need to do” is create a product. They’re hard to create right? Actually, no they are not. There is plenty of no cost content online for you to use and some good software products to help you turn it into a quality e-book. If you don’t want to create your own product simply go to Elance and you will have experienced writers bidding to do the work for you.
You are an internet marketer, not a writer. Have one product created, set up pay per click campaigns, write a press release and blast a few articles over the net on the topic of your e-book. Create another and then another and so on………..
Multiple streams of autopilot income are the secret of all wealthy entrepreneurs. Now anyone can set up multiple income streams filling their bank accounts twenty four seven thanks to e-books and the internet.

Conversational Marketing And The Online Branded Advertising Experience
Many of the most useful publishing formats and many of the most widely used sites are hard to effectively monetize.
The solution is to use targeting technology and blend ads and content so closely that they appear to be one and the same. Many people have pushed this from many different angles.
This is somewhat of a rambling post about the merging of content and advertising.
Offline Ad Integration
I recently went to a hospital with a friend. While I was there I flipped open some magazine published by WebMD and read what was perhaps the most basic article on bipolar disorder ever written. The page long article had pictures added to make it two pages long, so the content wrapped around an advertisement for a bipolar drug, and there was even a quiz in there, which was not quite as overt as this Effexor one, but still pretty bad.
How Bad Does Google AdSense Suck at Monetizing Contextual Ads?
Many months ago as an experiment I created a backfill AdSense ad group where I bid a dime a click. Many of those ads appeared on Digg and MySpace and lots of blogs. The overall group had a 2 cent CPM. 19,083,546 ad views cost me $338.01.
Individual publishers can focus their content on expensive topics, but they still can’t push the ads too aggressively in their content to their regular audience without losing some of their credibility and exposure.
Bloggers & Smaller Independent Publishers
There are many different takes on how individuals publishers can profit:
* Sell products or services, like I do here. The easiest thing to sell is something associated with your brand. Nobody is going to get mad at Discovery.com for promoting a Discovery toy store.
* Dave Winer suggests using authority and influence for indirect profit
* sell ads: contextual, brand ads, keep your main channel clean while creating an associated offers section on your site, or some combination.
In many verticals advertising is overtaking the other monetization models. You only need to think back to the WordPress Mesothelioma fiasco to remember how much people are willing to trade in their brand for a few dollars, and as long as Google puts a $0 value on your content then advertising is going to beat out paid content in most fields.
